Isle of Lewis Chess Set – replica of the 12th-century Viking originals, linked to both Scotland and Ireland. A collector’s gift steeped in heritage.
Step back into the Viking Age with the Isle of Lewis Chess Set, one of the world’s most famous and enigmatic game sets. The original pieces, carved from walrus ivory in the 12th century, are housed today in the British Museum in London and the National Museum of Scotland.
The story of their discovery is as dramatic as the pieces themselves: the hoard was unearthed in the 1800s, hidden away on the remote Isle of Lewis in Scotland’s Western Isles. Many experts believe the set was bound for Ireland, as a remarkably similar chess piece was uncovered in Clonard, Co. Meath, in 1817. Both the Lewis hoard and the Irish find are thought to have come from the same Viking workshop.
This replica set allows you to own a piece of that rich history. Each figure captures the distinctive Norse style, from stern kings and queens to warriors, bishops, and pawns. More than just a chess set, it’s a striking heritage gift that connects Ireland, Scotland, and Scandinavia through a shared medieval past.
