Step into Ireland’s myth and tradition with this Celtic Chess Set, inspired by the ancient Irish strategy game Fidchell, created by Lugh the Ildána, Celtic God of Arts and Crafts. More than a game, this set is a journey into Irish history and artistry.
The board design represents Ireland itself — the four corners mark the provinces of Ireland, while the central square symbolises the fifth province, Meath, home to the High King on the Hill of Tara.
In play, the High King and his eight defenders face twelve attackers. The King’s challenge is to escape capture and reach one of the provinces, relying not on numbers but on strategy and skill. Rules are included to help players discover this fascinating game.
In Wales there is a version of the games called Gwyddbwyll.
